About Corfu

Why Corfu ranks among the best destinations in Greece.

The island of Corfu belongs to the Ionian Sea and also includes the so-called Diapontian Islands, namely Mathraki, Othonoi and Ereikoussa. Corfu constitutes a very popular tourist destination and many visitors come to Corfu by air or sea during the summer. It is, also, notable that Corfu’s old town centre was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007, since it boasts a town centre of great historic and cultural significance.

Moreover, Corfu’s most attractive aspect is the existence of numerous, amazing beaches, either pebbly or sandy that, most of the times, are being surrounded by dense vegetation, captivating every tourist who visits this island.

Paleokastritsa

Paleokastritsa constitutes a major Corfiot landmark, while the surrounding landscape along with the amazing beach with crystalline seawaters makes this place unique. Apart from the main beach in this area, there are also paths that lead to some hidden, not widely-explored bays, where you can have a dive.

Achilleion Palace

Achilleion Palace was built by the Empress of Austria (widely-known as Sissy) in 1890, while William II purchased it after Sissy’s death. Both of them were very keen on Corfu’s history and culture and thus they managed to build a palace of great architecture that is being still preserved as a museum.

Corfu Old Town

Corfu’s old town centre is a historic monument itself. The narrow streets – the so-called kadounia – along with the buildings still maintain the Venetian architecture of the past. The local history and culture of Corfu is being preserved through the numerous museums in Corfu, boasting collections of several, significant eras in the history of Corfu.

Lakones

Lakones is a traditional and picturesque village near the famous resort of Paleokastritsa, boasting a certain spot, namely “Bella Vista” that offers unparalleled views to a large part of the island’s coastline.

Kanoni

Kanoni is a unique location, boasting the monastery of Panagia Vlacherna and Pontikonissi, located just opposite Kanoni. Many tourists visit this place in order to take a picture of this idyllic setting. In the centre of Pontikonissi, there is church, dated back to the 13th century.

Glyfada Beach

Glyfada beach is located on the west coast of Corfu and features an extremely long, sandy beach within an amazing landscape, full of lush greenery. It constitutes a family-friendly beach, offering lots of amenities, such as mini-markets, souvenir shops, tavernas, restaurants and beach bars.
